Travelling While Vegan

Share

One of the things I found difficult when I first went vegan was Travelling. It was something I did not really consider until I had to. From destination to booking flights , hotels or even restaurant reservations. Through trial and many errors, I came up with the following tips to consider before buying that ticket .

Pre-book your meal

Remember to tick the box for vegan meals when booking your flight. This might sound silly but I know what going hungry on a 7 hour flight feels like. I forgot to book a vegan meal and would have probably starved if a very kind flight attendant (who I later found out was also a travel influencer. Instagram @internationalflyguy) had not offered me a bowl of fruits.

Research

Do an extensive research before travelling. Research the country where you’re going to. Check if there are vegan restaurants in the area you want to stay. Look at their local foods and if there are accidentally vegan food you could eat. Also check out what fruits are in season should you not have access to cooked food at anytime.

Call Ahead

It is always a good idea to call ahead to speak to the restaurants to let them know your dietary needs. Most places are gracious enough to accommodate or make recommendations.

Choose a self-catering accommodation

Be it a serviced apartment or an air B&B, It is easier to be in an accommodation where you could prepare your own meals. I understand that not everyone can cook but you can do a lot more in an apartment than you would in a hotel room.

Connect with other vegans

The best guides are fellow vegans. They would help you navigate the city. I usually use hashtags to find vegans in any town I am in and send them direct messages. People are usually happy to help.

Travel with some basics

You might find packing a couple of dried foods (ie. teas, biscuits, pot noodles or vegan coffee whitener) helpful especially if you arrive at night with no access to food.

Do not forget to have fun

Lastly, do not forget to have fun . Check out vegan events and mixers in your destination. Organise meet-ups with other vegans.
